MLA is tabling motion of cost of childcare

THE Assembly is to be asked to introduce a new affordable childcare strategy.

South Down MLA Cathy Mason is tabling a motion on the issue, urging the devolved administration to legislate for a high quality, affordable and sustainable childcare strategy to be prioritised.

She said childcare costs are unaffordable for many parents and places added financial pressure on families during an already challenging time.

“This is creating a barrier for many parents to work or advance their careers,” said Mrs Mason.

“Childcare workers and providers must also be supported, as many struggle to make ends meet due to the rising cost of doing business.”

Mrs Mason said good-quality and affordable childcare is key to growing the economy and supports the delivery of a strategy that helps both parents and providers.

“A childcare strategy is vital to understanding the needs of parents and ensuring we have a sustainable childcare sector providing a high standard of childcare going forward,” she said.

“I am determined to work with all parties, childcare providers and families, to prioritise making childcare affordable for all.”
