MLA calls for sports clubs to back rallies

A SOUTH Down MLA has called on sports clubs to support a major health rally in Downpatrick later this month by postponing all fixtures.

Thousands are expected at the Love the Downe rally which will take place in Downpatrick on Saturday, February 14, in protest at recent cuts to the Downe Hospital.

Sinn Fein MLA, Chris Hazzard, has written to all sports clubs in the district urging them to postpone fixtures to allow players and supporters to attend the rally.

There has been huge concern in Down District since the Downe Hospital A&E department was closed at weekends leaving players who suffer injuries during matches facing lengthy journeys to Belfast hospitals.

“I have written to every local sports club this week in order to mobilise support across the county for the Valentine’s Day rally in Downpatrick - it is crucial that the public come out and show their support for our local hospital,” said Mr. Hazzard.

“Our local GAA, soccer, hockey, and rugby clubs all rely on our local hospital in their time of need, and our local clubs have been fantastic in the last year in supporting our call to protect the Downe.

“Unfortunately it has come to my attention that a number of clubs would love to bring big numbers to the rally but are currently scheduled to compete in fixtures in the local leagues.

“It is a predicament that leaves a large chunk of the support for the Downe with a horrible choice to make.”

Mr Hazzard added: “I have now contacted the organisers of our local leagues to ask that they allow clubs to postpone their fixtures so that our entire community can stand united in support for the Downe Hospital. I am hopeful that we can find a suitable accommodation.”
