Loughinisland sink Carryduff

11 May 2016

CARRYDUFF lost out to a physical stronger Loughinisland on Friday night.

Joe McFlynn opened the scoring, converting a Carryduff free kick in the sixth minute, but Paddy McKenny’s minute conversion for Loughinisland levelled affairs in the early stages.

Michael Brannigan’s 12th minute goal for Loughinisland was to prove a crucial score as it effectively gave the visitors the three point cushion they maintained to the break as the teams traded scores.

James Guinness found the target for Carryduff 13 minutes in, but failure to covert further frees were to prove costly for Carryduff. Dan Gordon, Aaron McClements and Declan Corrigan added points from play for Loughinisland to put the Blues five points clear.

Carryduff had a late rally to finish out the half, James Guinness pointing twice, to leave Loughinisland with a 1-4 to 0-4 lead.

Jonny Henry opened the second half with a Carryduff point but from the kick-out before Rory Mason converted a free.

Not to be outdone, Carryduff ‘keeper Marks Hinds pulled off a superb save a moment later to keep Carryduff in touch.

However, a converted Mason free and a sublime long range point from Dan Gordon pressed home Loughinisland’s advantage. James Guinness managed to kick the score of the game from a very acute angle and under considerable pressure to bring the deficit down to six points.

The home side were thrown a lifeline when Joe McFlynn was hauled down in the box in the 46th minute. After administering Ryan Stranney a yellow card for his misdemeanour, referee Damien Laverty awarded the penalty, which was effectively converted by McFlynn.

Now within three points of their opponents, Carryduff never asserted any real threat thereafter.

Loughinisland, buoyed by the advantage of the breeze, took control of the game and their physical advantage saw them claim another five scores within the last quarter as they held Carryduff scoreless in that same period.

Points from play from Gordon and McKenny were followed by Loughinsland’s second goal after wing back Dean McLaughlin got on the end of a move that effectively carved the Carryduff defence open.

Corner back Sean Cochrane got his name on the score sheet with a fine point in the 57th minute and the last score of the game was claimed by a Loughinisland substitute to give the visitors a 2-11 to 1-0 victory.
