Lives put at risk by vandals at Killyleagh harbour claim

9 March 2016

VANDALS have tampered with lifesaving equipment after striking again at a scenic walkway in Killyleagh.

A rope packed into a canister which is available to assist people who may get into difficulty in the water has been ripped from its mounting and thrown to the ground, while light attached to a wall at the quay was smashed, exposing live electrical wires.

It’s understood the damage was caused at the weekend and residents are becoming increasingly concerned at what they view as a rise in anti-social behaviour.

Mr John Brennan, of the Strangford TUV branch, has expressed concern about the anti-social behaviour and the potential impact the actions of those involved could have.

He says he’s been contacted by a number of concerned residents and is warning that the removal of the rope puts lives at risk.

“This sort of behaviour is completely unacceptable and should not be tolerated,” he declared. “The rope packed into canisters along the quay area are lifesaving devices and should not be abused in this manner.

“You never know when someone may need this vital equipment and if it is not where it is meant to be there could be serious implications and someone could lose their life.”

Mr Brennan has also appealed to anyone who knows anything about the recent incidents to contact police. He also wants residents at this part of the town to remain vigilant and report anyone tampering with lifesaving equipment to contact police immediately.
