Lisa’s sweet idea to help missionary work in India

A KILLYLEAGH church’s Jelly Bean appeal is helping transform lives in India.

Young people from 1st and 2nd Killyleagh Presbyterian Church have been behind the novel drive to give away sweets in support of missionary work on the other side of the world.

Last month they gave out small sweet bottles filled with Jelly Bean sweets and asked people to fill them with coins to support a former member of the congregation, Lisa Khongthang (nee Shank), from Killyleagh, who is working as a missionary with her husband Alen.

Separately church members have also been supporting Lisa’s work.

On Sunday, Lisa returned to 1st Killyleagh for the first time in four years to see the first of the bottles being returned and thank members of the congregation for their support.

“This is the place where I first learned about Jesus at Sunday School and in the Girls Brigade. It is nice to return to say thank you for the support of everyone who has been helping Alen and myself in our missionary work,’’ said Lisa.

She explained that they are set to move to Delhi to start their own church outreach.

The minister, Rev Hiram Higgins, said: “It is great to see Lisa again. She is one of our own from Killyleagh who has shown tremendous self-sacrifice by going to India to preach the good news.’’
