Lions 10k to be roaring success

Lions 10k to be roaring success

18 March 2015

IT’S almost the time of year again to dust down those running and walking shoes.

Ballynahinch Lions Club is gearing up for its annual 10K fun run and walk on Saturday, April 18, which has been a major success since its launch 26 years ago, raising thousands of pounds for local charities.

The Ballynahinch event is now firmly established as one of the district’s most popular sport and community events, attracting hundreds of runners and spectators to the market town.

Throughout its colourful history, the 10K and fun run has attracted a range of participants ranging from children to pensioners and some of Northern Ireland’s top athletes.

The 10K event starts at 1.30pm outside the Market House in Ballynahinch town centre, with the fun run getting underway from the same point one hour later. Once again the course winds its way through the picturesque Montalto estate, with the 10k and fun run providing a challenge for the serious athlete, the fun runner or those who just want to walk the course.

People taking part in the events are being encouraged to raise funds for their own particular charity or for any of the worthy causes Ballynahinch Lions Club supports.

The 10K race — open to runners aged 15 and over — has been altered to avoid steps along the Riverside Walk section and will be electronically timed. Online entries for the event can be made at the Athletics NI website.

Ballynahinch Lions are also delighted Gordons Chemists and Down Council are sponsoring the 10K and fun run with a host of prizes up for grabs on the day.

Ahead of the April 18 event, drivers are asked to exercise caution while athletes, fun runners and walkers will be on roads around the town. A number of roads will be close for a short period with those affected including High Street, Church Street, Church Road and the Spa Road.

Lions Club president, Peter Hughes, is appealing for people to be patient during the event, explaining the safety of competitors and spectators is of paramount importance.

“We want everyone to have an enjoyable day with us in Ballynahinch. As usual, runners, joggers or walkers will be taking part, with adequate changing facilities available at the Market House and the nearby Windmill Street community centre,” he continued.

Mr. Hughes is also urging participants to register early to avoid congestion with an advance entry facility available at the community centre.

He added: “From a spectator point of view, one of the highlights of the run is the fancy dress section, which always attracts both bizarre and imaginative entries.

“We are inviting everyone to come along on April 18 to enjoy what has always been a most enjoyable event. Even if you are not a participant, let’s hear a massive roar of encouragement for all.”

Further information about the event is available at www.ballynahinchlionsclub.co.uk with a complimentary cup of tea or coffee available for all participants before and after the 10K and fun run.
