Law firm to support local charity after sudden death of partner

11 November 2015

ONE of the area’s best known legal firms is helping raise funds for Northern Ireland Chest, Heart  and Stroke during November.

Murlands, which has offices in Downpatrick, Ballynahinch and Carryduff, is once again waiving its fee for the preparation of wills all this month, subject to a donation being made to the charity which recently launched its Christmas Heart research appeal.

The legal firm’s decision to support the charity came after the tragic death of its senior partner Barry Finlay, a highly respected member of the legal profession.

He died last year as a result of a heart attack following his return from holiday. Murlands keen to undertake the free preparation of wills in Barry’s memory to help people affected by heart disease by raising money to help save lives.

The legal firm hopes to raise around £2,000 through the free wills’ scheme, with all donations going directly towards the charity’s Heart Research Fund.

Alan Reid, of Murlands Solicitors, said it is important to all of the team to do something positive in Barry’s memory.

He added: “We are pleased that all funds raised will help find new ways of identifying people at risk of heart disease.”

Kerry Anderson, Director of Income Generation for the charity, said it’s delighted Murlands has chosen to support it.

“This year, we’re spending more than £300,000 on locally based research into chest, heart and stroke illnesses. Four out of five of the projects we’re supporting are heart related,” he explained. “Although we have made huge advances in the treatment and prevention of heart disease, there are still too many people dying without any warning that they have it. Through donations and our heart research, we can save more lives.”
