Ladies produce the goods to secure promotion

DOWNPATRICK Tennis Club’s ladies have won Division 2 the Belfast and District Evergreen League.

Their last two matches took them to Coleraine, where they played out of their skins to come home with a 4-0 win, and to Omagh where they repeated the dose in sunny conditions with a 4-0 victory over Team West.

That left them unbeaten in the division. Promotion to Division 1 next year awaits the team of Liz Jackson, Anna McCartan, Sara McMillen and Eileen Holmes.

The same weekend saw the club’s U-18 boys finish runners-up in the U-18 Juvenile League Division 4 with a possible promotion next year.

The team consisting of Aidan Murdock, Dan Browne, Robin Wilson, William Browne, Patrick Browne and Callum Dunn won four matches and drew two to finish only one point behind the winners, Helen’s Bay.

This was their first year in the U-18 League and it was a massive jump for all but one of the boys as they stepped up from the U-14s last year.

Their achievement is incredible considering their ages and they will have many more years at U-18 level to prove their ability.

The U-18 girls also fared well, finishing joint third in their division with St. Patrick’s Racquets, Newtownards and Ballycastle.

Mollie Cunningham, Rosalyn Magee, Katie Cunningham and Laura McMillen played St. Pat’s at home and cruised to an impressive 6-0 win.

Next was Ballycastle, who had to travel to Downpatrick. The girls played their singles matches first and won emphatically, leaving them 4-0 in front before the long intense doubles games got under way on a very hot Sunday afternoon.

The girls pulled through and the final result was 6-0 to the Downpatrick girls, who will be promoted to Division 2 next year.

The reserves, who also played matches along the way, were Rachel Browne, Rebecca Martin, Orla McCartan Anya Coffey and Emily Adams.

Downpatrick Tennis Club is planning a Parks Tennis summer camp from July 9-11. The cost for the three days is £10 per person. 5-10 years, 10.30am to 12pm; 11-17 years, 12-1.30pm. For further information contact Anna McCartan at annamccartan@gmail.com
