WORK to revitalise Killyleagh has been praised by Rowallane councillor David Lee-Surginor who has commended the various groups in the town which have played key roles.

He met recently with representatives from the Killyleagh Revitalisation Working Group consortium which includes members of the town’s Community Association, Development Association and Hans Sloan Centre.

Work to revitalise Killyleagh is being overseen by Newry, Mourne and Down Council officers in conjunction with the Department for Communities and Department for Finance.

Cllr Lee-Surginor said the revitalisation project “signifies a beacon of hope” for towns like Killyleagh, offering a multitude of benefits poised to breathe new life into the community.

“The revitalisation initiative holds the promise of a brighter future, with tangible improvements set to enhance both the aesthetic appeal and economic vitality of the town,” he continued.

“Foremost among these benefits is the transformation of derelict buildings, injecting renewed energy into the local landscape with planting schemes, while preserving the area’s unique heritage.”

The Rowallane councillor said the provision of a new murals reflecting Killyleagh’s rich history will not only “beautify the town,” but serve as enduring testaments to its cultural legacy, fostering a sense of pride among residents and visitors alike.

“One of the most significant outcomes of the revitalisation effort is the opportunity afforded to local businesses through the access to the shop front scheme,” Cllr Lee-Surginor explained.

“By revitalising shopfronts and enhancing the overall visual appeal of commercial areas, this initiative aims to attract increased foot traffic and bolster economic activity, thereby stimulating growth and prosperity within the community.”

Cllr Lee-Surginor said the Killyleagh Revitalisation Scheme highlights the importance of such collaborative endeavours, the invaluable contributions and knowledge of all involved parties in realising the vision of a revitalised town.
