Killyleagh man is jailed for sex abuse

28 September 2016

A KILLYLEAGH man has been jailed for a series of sexual assaults on a young girl.

Fifty seven year-old Dermot Patrick Teggart, of Castle Gardens, was sentenced to one year and eight months in prison after admitting six offences of sexual assault against a child under the age of 13 years.

Teggart, who was sentenced at Downpatrick Crown Court sitting in Dungannon on Wednesday, also admitted two charges of common assault against the girl and another of threatening to kill her.

The offences were carried out on an unknown date between March 20, 2011 and February 1, 2014.

Judge Stephen Fowler imposed the prison sentence and ordered that when Teggart is released he must spend another one year and eight months on licence.

Teggart was also disqualified from working with children and was ordered to sign the sex offender’s register for life. A Sexual Offences Prevention Order, which bars him from having any contact with children under the age of 16, was also imposed and will last for seven years.

A previous four month suspended sentence, imposed in Downpatrick Magistrate’s Court for driving while disqualified, was also activated to run concurrently with the longer sentence.
