KAROL Keating, of Portaferry, claimed the 2016 Down Senior Down Poc Fada crown at Hen Mountain, Hilltown, on Saturday.

He beat off a strong field and finished two points ahead of county star Paul Sheehan. Conditions were absolutely perfect for this unique GAA sporting and cultural contest and Keating was thrilled to win again.

The senior field also included Conor Keenan and Brian Og Murphy, of Warrenpoint, John Murphy, of Clonduff, and Ian Galway, representing Bredagh.

The U-16 honours went to Ciaran Watson, of Ballygalget, with Callum McConville, of Ballyvarley, in the runners-up position.

In the camogie events Danielle McCourt of Ballyholland Harps edged out Roisin McConnell and Caitriona McCrickard to win the senior award, while Ann Marie Smyth claimed the U-16 title.

The Down Hurling Officer, Thomas Daly, congratulated everyone for participating and making this a great event. He thanked Conor O’ Toole, Ryan McShane, Kieran Mewgraw and Ryan Gaffney for planning and facilitating this event.

He wished all the winners the best of luck in representing County Down at the Ulster Provincial Poc Fada in the coming weeks with a chance to advance to the National competition.
