Interim boss to get £1,000 a day from local council

A TEMPORARY director who took up his post with Newry, Mourne and Down Council this week is being paid £1,000 a day for a three-day week.

Adam Wilkinson has been appointed as the interim Director of Regulatory and Technical Services and during his six-month contract will earn in the region of £72,000.

Mr Wilkinson will replace Canice O’Rourke, who is retiring and whose position is not expected to be filled until around Christmas.

An experienced local government director in England, Mr Wilkinson has been appointed because of the importance of the work begin undertaken within the Department, including a potential multi-million pound transformation of the refuse collection service.

In a statement on Mr Wilkinson’s appointment, a Newry, Mourne and Down Council spokesman said he has been appointed for six months.

“Given the critical nature of the services within the Regulatory and Technical Services Directorate, the Council has agreed to engage a Director to fulfil the designated role on an interim basis, pending open recruitment for the appointment,” said the spokesman.

“Mr Wilkinson will work within Newry, Mourne and Down District Council three days per week, Tuesday-Thursday inclusive. The chargeable day rate for this interim position will be made up of two component parts; namely £834 plus VAT labour rate per day, plus daily receipted expenses up to a maximum of £165 per day. There will be no further payments, for example severance, at the end of this interim arrangement.

“The council’s Statement of Accounts for 2017/2018 will be published in September 2018 and will include all financial statements and disclosures as required by law,” added the spokesman.
