PLANS to enhance and extend the picturesque ropewalk path in Killough have received a major boost.

Down Council has secured a section of land stretching from Killough Castle towards Fisherman’s Row required by the Palatine Trust in the village to extend the popular scenic walk.

Last week, Dr. Finbar McCormick, a senior lecturer at Queen’s University’s School of Geography, Archaeology and Palaeoecology who lives in Killough and who is working with Palatine Trust officials to extend the path, met with local politicians to discuss the proposal.

South Down MP Margaret Ritchie, who was joined by councillors Dermot Curran and Gareth Sharvin at the meeting, explained the Palatine Trust is working towards the regeneration of the ropewalk path.

She said Down Council acquiring the piece of land was central to the project proceeding and is delighted this has now happened, taking the regeneration and extension of the coastal path a step closer.

“Dr. McCormick and the Palatine Trust have been working on this project and it’s due to their hard work and dedication that we are now moving toward the regeneration of the area for the recreation and enjoyment of the local community,” continued Miss Ritchie.

“This project will help not only regenerate this part of Killough, but allow the public to enjoy the high quality of this coastal walk.”

Councillor Curran commended the Palatine Trust on its vision for the local area. He said the extension of the ropewalk path will be a “great asset” to the local community and complete what is a very beautiful walk around the village.

Councillor Sharvin said the acquisition of the land the Trust requires will result in an “area of neglect” receiving investment and opportunity of improvement.

He added: “This area has been forgotten over the past few years. Now ownership is in the hands of Down Council we can look forward to continuing the already well utilised ropewalk across the coastal front of Killough. It will be a great addition to the village and help attract visitors to sample what is a beautiful coastal view.”
