Greenkeeper gets revenge at sunny Spa

30 October 2019

SPA golfers faced a novel end-of-season challenge on Saturday when head groundsman Lee Cartmill set up the 18-hole course for his Greenkeeper’s Revenge competition.

It was essentially a fun event which attracted a large number of both ladies and gents and proved to be so popular it is likely to feature again on the Spa calendar.

But the devilishly difficult pin placings did not deter Alan Carson who topped the leaderboard with a magnificent score of 43 points while Catherine McEvoy won the ladies 13-hole competition with 21 points.

Spa PGA professional Gary Wardlow warned competitors that the pins were in “rather unusual positions” but after a number of impressive scores were returned he reckoned it had not been sufficiently challenging.

Stuart Alexander had his best start for many months with eight straight pars followed by a birdie at the par four 10th, but unfortunately his great run did not continue.

At least two other competitors — Sam Boyd and William McAnally — also had birdies at the 10th where the pin was placed in the left-hand green side bunker.

Men’s results: 1st Alan Carson (43 points), 2nd George Wilson (40), 3rd Chris Chittick (38), 4th Stephen Adams (35), 5th Brian Graham (35).

Ladies’ results: 1st Catherine McEvoy (21 points), 2nd Vivienne Abernethy (20), 3rd Carol Shields (18 points after countback).
