Grammar school students’ EU debate in Dublin Castle

STUDENTS from Ballynahinch’s Assumption Grammar School got to experience political sparring at the highest level in Dublin Castle last week.

Lucy Connor, Tara Connolly and Aileen Gallagher debated the hot topic of renewable energy targets in the eighth annual Model Council of the European Union.

The Ballynahinch team role-played Hungary in an intense and well informed discussion among 27 other schools from across Ireland.

The Dublin Castle debate was opened by Minister of State for European Affairs, Dara Murphy TD and Tim Hayes, the European Commission’s Ireland representative.The debate was chaired byGreen Party leader, Eamon Ryan.

The Ballynahinch students were joined by others from almost 30 schools across Ireland at the event, representing the 28 EU member states.
