Gareth to perform in latest role

DOWNPATRICK actor Gareth McGreevy is performing in the Grand Opera House for St Agnes’ Choral Society’s production of Me and My Girl.

The family comedy is a 60th anniversary production for the Belfast based choral society.

Sixty members, spanning 18 to almost 80 years-old, are preparing to entertain audiences with the Tony Award-winning musical between May 9 and 13.

A musician and teacher, Gareth has a dual role in the society this year as he is both chairman as well as playing a leading role in the production. Having joined St Agnes’ in 2008 for their production of Annie Get Your Gun, Gareth said he has never looked back.

”I have appeared on stage with many companies in Northern Ireland but there was just something special about St. Agnes’ — there was a great buzz in the rehearsal room and it soon became clear that St. Agnes’ was more of a family,” he said.

While trying to organise production elements behind the scenes for the show, Gareth also has to manage his time as he plays the comic part of the Right Hon. Gerald Bolingbroke on stage.

“He’s a great character to play — he’s referred to as a ‘silly nit’ in the show and it has to be one of my favourite roles to date,” said Gareth.

Reflecting on the 60th anniversary celebrations, Gareth said: ”This has been a special year to date and we are thoroughly looking forward to ‘letting it rip’ in The Grand Opera House next week.”

The company is fundraising in its 2016/17 season in support of the NI Alzheimer’s Society. Over £3,000 has been raised to date. With help from audiences at ‘Me and My Girl’, St Agnes’ hopes to reach is fundraising goal of £5,000.
