Fond farewell to Killyleagh lollipop lady after 40 years of dedication

20 December 2023

IT was a bittersweet moment for teachers and children at Killyleagh Integrated Primary School as they wished one of the school’s most dedicated and cherished staff members a happy retirement.

For 40 years, Mrs Hilary Mackenzie has served as the school’s lollipop lady, safely guiding the children, their parents and guardians on their route to school.

“The students are absolutely fantastic,” Mrs Mackenzie said. “They are just a brilliant, well-mannered and friendly bunch of kids.

“I am lucky enough to have loved my job, and it is something I am going to miss but I am looking forward to enjoying my retirement.”

Mrs Mackenzie has helped generations of family members cross the road to enter the corridors of the school.

“In the 40 years I’ve worked there, I have helped my friend’s daughter cross the road and have helped her daughter’s children in recent years,” she said.

“All the children are so friendly. They would never walk past without having a quick chat nor would any of the parents. The school has a lovely atmosphere.

“I’ll miss the laughter and joy on the faces of the kids dearly.”

To celebrate her retirement, Mrs Mackenzie will be going to the Slieve Donard Hotel on Friday to enjoy a relaxing weekend, organised by her daughter.

“I am having a relaxing afternoon of tea with the teachers and staff today,” said Mrs Mackenzie.

“I would like to thank all the staff for all their support. They are a brilliant group of people who I have enjoyed working with and getting to know.”

The school principal, Mr Jason Milligan, said: “Hilary will be hugely missed but we wish her well for a happy retirement.”

Local councillor Jonny Jackson paid tribute to Mrs Mackenzie for her time serving the community.

“I know many parents are so grateful for Hilary getting their children across a busy and dangerous road to school in the mornings,” he said.

“I just want to wish Hilary all the very best in her retirement, it’s been well earned.”
