Firms buy new tables for village

7 October 2015

GENEROUS members of the Crossgar business community have financed the provision of new picnic tables for use at the village’s Lislea Drive playground.

The new tables were purchased after the Crossgar Community Association received £750 in donations from Crossgar Dental Practice, VC Cabs and GB Poultry.

Orla McCormick, from the Dental Practice, and Vincie Casement, from VC Cabs, joined community group officials Paul Teggart, Joe McVeigh and and Eddie Craig last week to formally hand over the new tables. Gregory Bell from GB Poultry was unavailable to attend.

Mr Teggart, the community group’s chairman, thanked the businesses for their support and said the picnic tables will be well used.

“There are no tables close to the play equipment and the new ones financed by local businesses will make a real difference. The tables will allow parents and grandparents to rest up while the children enjoy themselves,” he said.

“Crossgar is fortunate to have business people who support their village and everyone now hopes the play equipment which was destroyed in last July’s arson attack van be replaced as quickly as possible.”

The play park was temporarily closed following the attack when a tyre was set alight, extensively damaging a play tower and rubber surfacing. The repair bill has been estimated at £85,000.

Newry, Mourne and Down Council confirmed recently it intends to replace the damaged equipment and plans to ask local people for their views on what they would like to see provided.

Mr Teggart added: “Everyone hopes the process to provide the new play equipment will be completed as soon possible.

“The play park is a widely used facility and on behalf of everyone who uses it I want to thank the business community for donating money to purchase the new picnic tables which will help enhance this part of the village.”
