Family in mourning following pensioner’s death

15 July 2020

THE funeral of the Saintfield man who died after a road accident last week takes place today.

Described as “part of the fabric” of his home town and his church, Mr Norman Jackson from Carsontown Road, Saintfield, died in hospital last Wednesday after his Hyundai i10 car collided with another car on the Station Road just before 4pm.

The former police officer, who was in his eighties, was an elder of First Saintfield Presbyterian Church.

The female driver of a Volkswagen Golf was also injured and was treated in hospital.

It’s the second tragic local death on the roads recently and follows the death of 18 year-old Samuel McCullough, from Crossgar, in a two-vehicle collision on June 22.

Rowallane councillor Kathryn Owen paid tribute to Mr Jackson.

“My thoughts and prayers are with Norman’s wife, his family and friends. He was well-known and loved in Saintfield and part of the fabric of First Saintfield Church,” said the DUP councillor.

Strangford MLA Peter Weir expressed sympathy to Mr Jackson’s family and friends.

“It’s desperately sad to hear that a man has died following a two vehicle collision in Saintfield,” he said.

“I understand that a female driver in a separate car was injured and has been taken to hospital. I wish her a full and speedy recovery and I would urge anyone with any information to make this known to the PSNI.”

A thanksgiving service for Mr Jackson will be held at 11.30am today in First Saintfield Presbyterian Church.

Mr Jackson is survived by his wife, Constance, and children Barbara, Alan and Adrian.

Police, who attended the scene along with other emergency services, have appealed for information and dash cam footage from witnesses, who are asked to ring 101, quoting reference number 1184 of 08/07/20.
