Drumaness secure revenge derby win

DRUMANESS gained revenge for a recent Junior Cup defeat when they beat Saintfield by six wickets on Sunday.

Drumaness, who lost the toss, got off to the perfect start with the score on 13 when Gary Moore threw to James Cunningham, who ran out Ahire, Saintfield’s professional, for 6.

Neil Gelston then had Harrison caught behind by Alistair Coburn two balls later without scoring. Owens and Woodruff then looked to steady the Saintfield innings, but with the score on 36 Woodruff was caught at cover by Garry Walsh off the bowling of Darren Oldroyd for 14.

Patrick Telford joined Owens and the pair added 50 for 4th wicket before Martin Gartland bowled Owens for 30. Hammel was next man in for Saintfield and he and Telford showed composure as they punished any loose Drumaness deliveries, Hamill in particular finding the boundary.

He had reached 52 when he was out caught at deep mid-wicket by Ryan McCoubrey off the bowling of Garry Walsh. Telford was to follow caught at mid-off by Martin Gartland off the bowling of Neil Walsh for 22.

Neil Walsh then picked up the wickets of Sofley, caught behind by Coburn for 12 and then bowling Mitchell for 9 to leave Saintfield 168 for 8. The Saintfield innings came to an end when R. Murray was bowled by Garry Walsh before Oldroyd had McConnell caught by Coburn as Saintfield reached 175.

Drumaness’ reply got off to a bad start when in the second over Neil Gelston was caught at cover by Sofley off the bowling of Harrison for 5. Drumaness were soon 20 for 2 when Darren Oldroyd was bowled by Sofley for 13. Garry Walsh and Neil Walsh then came together and the pair added 51 for the 3rd wicket before Garry Walsh was bowled by Philip Murray for 19.

Martin Gartland was next man and battled positively finding the boundary with regular occurrence before with the score on 124 was caught by Harrison from the bowling of Sofley for 30.

James Cunningham, batting with an injury, came in at number 6 and he and Neil Walsh, who passed his 50, soon gained the advantage for Drumaness. Cunningham and Walsh’s partnership of 55 won the match for Drumaness when Cunningham pulled Woodruff for 4 to leave Drumaness victors by six wickets.

 

Walsh’s innings of 61 not out was outstanding and Cunningham finished 37 not out. A vital victory for Drumaness who play Victoria at home on Saturday.
