Dromara recover as Kilclief falter at death

10 August 2016

DROMARA produced a stunning second half blitz to overwhelm a tiring Kilclief at St Patrick’s Park, Newcastle, on Thursday night.

Kilclief dominated the first 30 minutes and should have gone in at the break with more than a 0-5 to 1-1 lead after squandering several good scoring chances.

It was a completely different story in the second half as Dromara ran away with the game, outscoring Cahal Hynds’ beleaguered troops 1-10 to 0-4.

Kilclief, who brought Marty Craig out of retirement, were able to call upon a few of their Portaferry contingent for this clash and they started positively with Conan Hynds causing mayhem with his forceful running.

However, it was Dromara who opened the scoring against the run of play in the eighth minute when Aaron Strain fed Connla Quinn and he buried the ball past a helpless Mark Polly.

Led by the swashbuckling Aiden McCann from full back, Kilclief set about reducing the arrears and unanswered points over the next 12 minutes from Hynds, Craig and Ciaran Sloan brought the sides level.

With 22 minutes gone Conor Burns edged Dromara into a 1-1 to 0-3 lead, but Kilclief regained the initiative with superb scores from McCann and Craig to take a 0-5 to 1-1 interval lead, but it should have been much, much more.

Dromara came out for the second half in determined fashion and scored six points without reply from John Fegan, Burns (0-2), Colm Kelly (0-2) and Connla Quinn to take a commanding 1-7 to 0-5 lead.

Eoghan Breen and Conan Hynds gave Kilclief some respite with well taken scores, but Quinn netted a second goal after great work from Paul Kelly to put Dromara into a 2-7 to 0-7 lead by the 39th minute.

P J Drake, Liam Kelly and Kieran Kelly tagged on points for Dromara before Craig replied for a 14 man Kilclief who had Conan Hynds red carded.

Colm Kelly and Craig swapped points in the dying stages as Dromara ran out impressive second half winners.
