STAFF at the Downe Hospital have been presented with an award for ensuring the safety and comfort of their patients.

The South Eastern Trust has recognised the work of staff at Ward 2 who have ensured no patient has recorded a hospital acquired pressure ulcer in 464 days.

The health trust’s pressure ulcer prevention and management award was handed over recently by the organisation’s assistant director of nursing and safe and effective care Lisa Dullaghan.

Health chiefs say the amazing accolade celebrates the hospital ward’s exceptional achievement, with the success testament to the unwavering dedication and diligence of staff in identifying early signs of pressure damage and taking proactive measures to prevent deterioration.

Under the leadership of ward manager Caroline Smith, the ward has implemented an exemplary system for ensuring the skin health of every at-risk patient.

The system involves daily checks  undertaken by nursing staff, along with regular assessments performed by healthcare assistants.

Through robust communication channels and the sharing of knowledge and awareness, the team has achieved and sustained this remarkable milestone.

Handing over the award, Ms Dullaghan congratulated the team on its achievement and continued efforts in pressure ulcer prevention and management.

“This award recognises the dedication and commitment of the staff in Ward 2 ensuring the highest standards of patient care,” she added.

The health trust’s tissue viability nurse lead, Vivienne Murdoch, also congratulated the team at the Down Hospital for achieving an impressive 464 days pressure ulcer-free.

She added: “This award highlights our continued efforts in pursuing excellence in pressure ulcer prevention ensuring the best outcomes for our patients.”
