Downe Hospital nurse Mary retires after 50 years caring for others

ONE of  Downe Hospital’s most popular and devoted nurses is retiring at the end of a career spanning 50 years.

Mary McElroy leaves behind a legacy of service that has touched the lives of countless patients and colleagues.

Mary began her nursing journey at Belvoir Park Hospital in Belfast before moving to the Royal Victoria Hospital and then to the Downe.

Mary had a passion for helping others and a commitment to making a difference in the lives of those she cared for. 

Throughout her remarkable career, Mary exemplified the true essence of empathy, professionalism and kindness.

In May 2023, she was awarded a Cavell Star Award for her dedication and commitment to patient care.

“It is with mixed emotions that I am now retiring,” Mary said as she reflected on her career.

“It has been an incredible journey filled with challenges, triumphs and unforgettable moments.

“I am grateful for the privilege of caring for patients and their families. I will cherish the memories and relationships that I have made for many years to come.”

She added: “As I embark on this new chapter of my life, I have a sense of pride and fulfilment knowing that I have made a difference in the lives of so many patients and their families.

“I would like to thank my colleagues for all the support they have given me throughout my career.”

Caroline Smith, Ward 2 manager at the Downe, said: “Mary’s leadership, expertise and dedication to patient care have left an indelible mark on the hearts of her patients she has cared for over the years.

“Her retirement marks the end of an era for Ward 2 and indeed for the Downe Hospital as a whole.

“Her commitment to nursing excellence and her compassionate approach to patient care have set a standard that will be remembered for years to come. Mary will be deeply missed by us all.”
