Down High joins rugby elite

1 February 2017

DOWN HIGH school has been invited to take part in a prestigious rugby programme.

The Downpatrick school is one of only six to take part in the Ulster Rugby Academy Partnership.

This programme, established last year, aims to strengthen existing links between the Ulster Rugby team and the talented young players being developed in schools across the province.

The purpose of this scheme is to develop a player-centred approach, enabling young players to reach their full potential and providing all players with a positive experience of rugby participation.

The launch of the partnership is recognition of the high standard of rugby provision that is evident at  Down High.

It also reflects the strong level of performance that is maintained throughout the rugby programme, something that can only be achieved by focusing on the welfare of the player.

It is notable that the school’s involvement with the scheme is only possible because of the excellent strength and conditioning programme that is currently operating.

Maud Perry, Down High principal, welcomed the initiative and the additional support that it will bring to all the coaches and players at the school.

“This partnership is a fabulous accolade for the school and demonstrates the impressive work and achievements of the rugby programme,” she said.

Inclusion in the partnership reinforces the successes of current Down High pupils. Year 14 student Zac Ward has had the opportunity to play for the Ulster U-19 squad while Year 14 pupil Claytan Milligan and Year 13 pupils Lewis Finlay and Robin Wilson have played key positions on the Ulster Schools’ side. Claytan and Lewis also gained the chance to train with the Irish Schools’ squad.

The accomplishments of these pupils reflect the high standard of coaching provided by experienced staff.

Earlier this season former pupil and current assistant first XV coach Aaron Cairns made his debut for the full Ulster side against Edinburgh.

Aaron Cairns and John Donnan, a past pupil currently on a development contract with Ulster Rugby, attended for a question and answer session.

The special guest was James Kirk, president of Ballynahinch Rugby Club, who voiced his support for the work that is being undertaken in the rugby programme.

Meanwhile, this Saturday Down High host Methodist College in the fourth round of the Danske Bank Schools’ Cup.

The Down High side, which includes Ulster representative players Zac Ward, Claytan Milligan (captain), Robin Wilson and Lewis Finlay, go into the fixture with plenty of confidence. Kick off is at 11am.
