Delight at Killyleagh bus shelter

LOCAL council officials have been thanked for honouring a commitment to provide a new bus shelter at Frederick Street in Killyleagh.

Councillor Billy Walker said the new shelter should have been in place in April and was concerned at the delay in providing a facility which will service the town’s Downpatrick and Belfast routes which are used by a substantial number of people.

A commitment to provide the new shelter was given by the former Down Council before it went out of business at the end of March when it merged with its neighbour Newry and Mourne to form one of 11 new super councils in Northern Ireland.

Councillor Walker was concerned the new shelter would not be provided, but is delighted it is now in place to provide cover for bus service users in Killyleagh.

“The arrival of the new shelter is good news for residents who rely on public transport, in particular, schoolchildren and the elderly. With winter now here the new shelter will be well used,” he said.

“I am very grateful to Newry, Mourne and Down Council officials for their assistance on this matter. I am pleased my long campaign for this facility was successful, with passengers who use the Downpatrick and Belfast routes also pleased the new shelter is now in place.”
