Deadly Dean wins boxing crown

12 June 2013

EAST Down ABC’s Dean Kayes won the Clubs for Young People Northern Ireland 46k title at the Ballymote Centre in Downpatrick last Saturday.

Dean, winner of the Multi-Counties title in Leixlip recently, took on Aaron Burns from Derrylin in the semi-final and was always one step ahead of his eager and disciplined opponent.

Dean side-stepped Burns’ advances to return with well placed shots of his own to take the win on all score cards. Dean then boxed Harry Wallace of

Immaculata in the final and it was never going to be easy against the Nine Counties champion.

It turned out to be the fight of the night as both boxers traded blows for three rounds.

Kayes’ cleaner punching and greater will to win landed him the title on a majority decision.

Also boxing for the Crossgar club was Eoin Mulholland who took on Josh Hamilton from Cairn Lodge ABC.

Unfortunately, Eoin was edged out by a single point in a fight that could have gone either way.
