Dancing pupils get in the groove

PUPILS from a number of local primary schools took to the stage at Down Leisure Centre in Downpatrick recently to show off their dance moves.

The special event took place after children from Saintfield’s Academy Primary, Crossgar’s St Josephs, St Patricks Primary Legamaddy, Downpatrick’s St Colmcille’s PS, St Michael’s Finnis and St Mary’s PS in Aughlisnafin took part in a dance programme.

It was organised by the Downpatrick, Rowallane and Slieve Croob District Electoral Area Forums in association with Jenna Finnegan Dance School.

A special dance programme was devised to promote health and well-being in the schools whom Jenna worked with over four weeks.

She choreographed individual and group dances which culminated in the showcase event at the leisure centre.

Newry, Mourne and Down Council chairwoman, Valerie Harte, commended what she described as the “excellent initiative” provided by the three DEAs.

She said the initiative allowed every child to participate in a fun activity which helped their physical and mental health.

“I have really enjoyed watching all the performances today and am very impressed with the level of dancing skill on display, well done to everyone involved,” the chairwoman continued.

“In researching the need for developing a dance focused project, it became clear to the DEAs that not all children are athletic and unless they play football, rugby, netball or other mainstream sports they are often left out and as a result often may not participate in any form of exercise.”

The leisure centre event concluded with a healthy lunch to encourage participants to try something new and consider making healthier food choices in the future.
