Curtis lifts his way to medal

A DOWNPATRICK teenager broke the Irish record for his weight and age category at the National Bench Press Championships in Cork at the weekend.

Nineteen year-old Curtis Mackin, who has only been involved in the sport for less than two years, exceeded all expectations when beating seasoned campaigners to the gold medal at the Irish Drug Free Power Association’s Bench Press Championships.

Curtis will now be heading for the Push Pull Championships in Gorey, Wexford, at the end of November and he has his sights set on improving his personal best in this category.

The world championships in two years’ time are Curtis’ ultimate target. He is coached at home by his dad, Seamus, who has clocked up over 30 years in the power, weight lifting game.
