Cunningham on fire for slick Saul at sad Carryduff

7 August 2013

LACKING any spirit and hunger, Carryduff lost two valuable league points when Saul emerged victorious at Páirc Aodha Dhuibh on Friday evening.

Saul got off to the best of starts with points from Leigh Cunningham and Ciaran Harney within the first two minutes.

Cathail Arnold converted a free to give Saul a three point advantage before Barry O’Neill fisted a rebounding shot over the crossbar to open Carryduff’s account.

Conor McCullough reduced the deficit in the 10th minute to a single point, but Carryduff were struggling to retain possession and turned the ball over to Saul to end a number of their own attacks.

In the 15th minute Ciaran Harney pointed to give Saul a two point cushion and Carryduff ‘keeper Kieran Lavery deflected a shot over the crossbar in the 18th minute.

When they had possession Carryduff continued to waste it and kicked a number of wides in succession. Joe McFlynn scored a great point in the 19th minute, but Saul had three further points from Arnold, Michael Vint and Harney.

Joe McFlynn added a further Carryduff point, but Carryduff’s wides tally was already mounting heavily. Saul were much more economical, only kicking one wide in the thirty minutes. The half-time score of Carryduff 0-4 Saul 0-9 was a fair reflection of the teams’ endeavours.

Saul took the first score of the second half, a converted point from Cunningham. Neill McGowan scored for Carryduff, but Carryduff had further wides from Conor Beatty and Jonny Henry.

Michael Vint added another for Saul before Neill McGowan’s finish to the Saul net raised a cheer from the home support, leaving three points in the game.

Although Barry O’Neill claimed a last minute point for Carryduff, Saul’s 56th minute point finished the game off.
