Cumran primary wins coveted excellence award

2 December 2015

CUMRAN Primary School has been named top ICT school in Northern Ireland.

The Clough primary has scooped the prestigious Northern Ireland C2K/Capita ICT Excellence Award for transforming teaching and learning through technology.

At a conference for more than 400 education experts at the Titanic Centre in Belfast, opened by Education Minister John O’Dowd, the local school was commended for integrating technology into the learning experience.

This was the first year of the awards with entries from all types of schools including primary, secondary, grammar and special schools.

The award recognised the high quality learning and teaching in Cumran on a daily basis where ICT was considered to be used as a tool to enhance the learning experiences for the children.

Judges said the school had fully integrated technology into the learning experience through the interactive use of projection, the use of coding and technology used to bring elements of the curriculum to life.

Principal of Cumran Primary School, Rhonda Moles, said she was delighted with the win.

“The judges were highly complimentary about our school.  One of the judges from England, a leading light in education and IT, said our school was the best primary school he had ever visited,” she said.

“I always say we at Cumran are unique, and it is great that yet again external bodies recognise how special Cumran is.  I would like to thank all those who played a part in helping us achieve this award – pupils, parents, staff and governors.”

The school organised a fun day which the pupils called ‘Marvellous Monday’ to celebrate the success.

At last week’s awards ceremony, judge Stephen Mossaid it was a pleasure to be involved in the judging, which he said enabled schools to demonstrate the impact their use of ICT has had on teaching and engagement with pupils, staff and wider school communities.

“The quality of the entries was extremely high and all schools should be proud of their achievements,” he said.
