Crossgar will get right facility

SIR, — Due to Down Council commitments I was unable to attend last week’s meeting organised by the Crossgar Community Association to discuss the provision of new sport and community facilities in the village.

While St. Colmcille’s High School’ has been selected by consultants working for Down Council as a potential base for a new facility, this is by no means certain.

Several people have contacted me to express their concern about any new provision being developed at the school site and I have told them that no final decision has yet been made.

There are several possible locations in the mix and there is some way to go before the site of the new complex will be decided.

Every potential site needs to be looked and a number of additional ones have come to light since the consultants who carried out a feasibility study on behalf of Down Council suggested the St. Colmcille’s High School site.

There are other potential locations I wish to discuss with council officials. In my opinion, the facility developed in Crossgar should be in a location similar to the one in Killyleagh which houses the very successful Bridge Community Centre. The facility in Crossgar should encompass the entire community and bring the whole community together.

Any suggestion that new community and sporting provision will be located at St. Colmcille’s High School are premature in my opinion. Other sites are still in the mix.

I am confident a new community facility in Crossgar can and will be delivered for all the people in the village, but every potential site needs to be closely examined.

I want to see a stand alone facility developed in Crossgar and have no doubt this can be achieved.

Yours etc.,

CLLR. BILLY WALKER,

Killyleagh.
