Crossgar surveyor onboard on plans for Casement Park

2 December 2015

A CROSSGAR man has been appointed to oversee the proposed multi-million pound redevelopment of the GAA’s Casement Park ground in Belfast.

Rory Miskelly has vast experience on major development projects and was the project manager of the Titanic Visitor Centre and the revamped Kingspan stadium, home of Ulster Rugby.

He also acted as the programme director for the Department of Culture Arts and Leisure on the redevelopment of Windsor Park, home of the Northern Ireland soccer team.

A chartered surveyor and chartered builder with over 20 years’ experience in the project delivery of major projects, Mr Miskelly is looking forward to the challenge ahead.

Planning permission for the proposed GAA stadium was overturned last December and since then the redevelopment plan has been embroiled in controversy over emergency exit plans. The GAA also faced opposition from local residents over the size of the state-of-the-art, 38,000-capacity stadium.

A new planning application is expected to be submitted within the next six months but before that more community consultation will take place amid reports that the GAA may be willing reduce the planned 38,000 capacity.

Mr Miskelly said he is looking forward to working on the Casement Park project.

He added: “I am looking forward to the challenge ahead and working on this very exciting project to redevelop Casement Park.”

Stormont sports minister, Carál Ní Chuilín, has welcomed the appointment by the Ulster Council’s  GAA of key personnel to the Casement Park redevelopment project, including Mr Miskelly who will have day-to-day responsibility for the delivery of the project going forward.

“I am pleased with the appointment of Rory Miskelly to the Casement Park team at this critical stage in the project,” said the minister.

She added: “Rory has played a key leadership role in the successful delivery of the Kingspan Stadium and Windsor Park over the past four years and will bring a tremendous skill set to the Casement Park project. The wealth of knowledge and experience Rory brings will be highly beneficial for this project.”
