Country fair rolls into town

Country fair rolls into town

9 September 2015

BALLYNAHINCH is gearing up for next weekend’s Harvest and Country Living event.

All roads lead to the market town on September 19 when the town square will be a hive of activity between noon and 4pm. Last year’s inaugural event was a major success and organisers have no doubt this year’s festival will be equally as good.

Created to celebrate the pig, potato and pageantry which the town was once popular for, the festival will see Phil’s Farm trot into town, giving children the chance to get up close and personal with their favourite animals.

Festival goers will be dancing in the streets from early afternoon as the event sounds off with the spectacular beating of the drums by Beat Carnival. There are an incredible number of acts lined up for the fun packed afternoon with street performers, face painting, The Just Adam Band, art cart, food village and much more.

Back by popular demand, The Great Ballynahinch Bake Off will see baking enthusiasts get their rolling pins out and compete for the best apple tart and scones in town.

The first prize in each category is £40, with £20 and £10 respectively going to those finishing second and third. Registration forms are available from Newcastle Visitor Information Centre, telephone (028) 4372 2222.

Ahead of the eagerly anticipated festival, Newry, Mourne and Down Council chairwoman Naomi Bailie said the local authority is delighted to be associated with the free event for families to enjoy.  “I would encourage local businesses to get involved and dress up their shop windows in line with the harvest and country living theme,” she remarked.

“Last year, the town looked fantastic and it will be great if more businesses hay up and make sure the town is looking amazing for this event.”
