Council launches competition to boost social links

28 August 2013

DOWN Council has launched a campaign to encourage more residents who engage directly with the authority through social media.

The council is running a competition, for a Samsung Galaxy Tablet 2, in a bid to increase the number of local homes who engage with the council on Facebook and Twitter.

Launching the competition, Chairwoman Maria McCarthy said as well as using social media as another channel for promoting the work of the Council officials want to use a reliable, instant way of getting vital service alerts to residents.

“We have used our Facebook and Twitter platforms to provide vital Council information to residents during times of bad winter weather or emergencies,” she said.

“This would include instant, real-time information on things like weather warnings, flood alerts and delays to bin collections. This type of information is particularly important in Down district where residents are often spread out over large, rural areas.

“Essentially Down Council’s corporate Facebook and Twitter pages are places where

people can talk to Council, whilst also taking ownership

of the district, its projects and its future planning. It’s an online shop-front for us to promote our projects and call for feedback.”

To be in with a chance of winning prize, simply ‘like’ Down District Council on Facebook and leave the comment “I’m connected in Down District” underneath the competition post. The winner will be drawn on Wednesday, September 18, and announced on Facebook and Twitter.
