Cormac joins pro ranks in Australia

3 February 2016

ARDGLASS golfer Cormac Sharvin tees off his professional career Down Under tomorrow.

The 23 year-old is in the field for the PGA Tour of Australasia’s $300,000 Oates Vic Open in Victoria, Australia.

He has the best wishes of the members of Ardglass Club where he began his meteoric rise to the top of the amateur game under the guidance of his coach, club professional Paul Vaughan.

Sharvin took the golfing world by storm when he won three points out of three for Great Britain and Ireland in last year’s Walker Cup win over the United States at Royal Lytham and St Anne’s.

He is regarded by many as one of the most talented Irish amateurs to emerge since Rory McIlroy and can’t wait to get going in Australia.

He starts his professional career after signing up with the globally renowned IMG sports management company.

“I am delighted to announce that I have turned professional,” Sharvin said. “I am looking forward to working with a great company.

“I would like to thank Paul Vaughan and everyone at Ardglass Golf Club for their tremendous support. I’m delighted to join team IMG and can’t wait to start my professional career.

“IMG has experience of working with the best golfers and athletes around the world and I believe they are in the best position to help me achieve my goals for this year and throughout my professional career.”

The talented  Sharvin joins the professional ranks after a distinguished amateur career, which saw him rise as high as No 14 in the world amateur rankings.

No stranger to the professional circuit, he has played in two events on the European Challenge Tour, but will make his professional debut tomorrow after having received a special tournament invitation.

“I have heard the tournament has supported younger players in the past and I am hopeful that I can live up to the tournament’s tagline of ‘where stars are born,” he added.

Guy Kinnings, Global Head of Golf, IMG, said: “Cormac is one of the brightest young talents to come through the amateur ranks in recent years.

“He has an appealing personality, is extremely passionate about the game and we look forward to helping his transition into professional golf and fulfilling his potential.”
