Conor signs for Celtic

A TEENAGE goalkeeper from Saul is heading to Paradise.

Sixteen year-old Conor Hazard signed on the dotted line for Scottish giants Celtic on Saturday after turning down offers to join several English clubs.

Conor, who started his career as a left back as a nine year-old before moving between the sticks three years later, has represented Northern Ireland at U-14, U-15 and U-16 levels.

Currently on Cliftonville’s books, the 6’ 6” custodian, can’t wait until July 1 when he moves to Glasgow for pre-season training.

“I can’t wait to get going,” he said. I am really looking forward to joining up with the rest of the squad for pre-season training. I am buzzing and delighted to have been given this opportunity.

Celtic are proud of the family atmosphere they have created for their junior players — a fact that wasn’t missed by Conor on his visits to Glasgow.

“Celtic’s training facilities and treatment of young players are second to none and that is one of the big reasons I decided to sign for them,” Conor explained.

“They are a progressive club and always looking to improve and I want to be part of that.”

Conor will be moving into club accommodation close to the Parkhead ground.

“I will be moving into digs as soon as I arrive. I am happy with what I have seen so far and I hope to settle in and get some game time under my belt.

“My ambition is to break into the first team inside a few years and take my chances when they come. I am a confident person and Celtic can only bring out the best in me.

“ I have been given a fitness programme to work on over the next few months.”

Conor is not short of self-belief and is already targeting the goalkeeper’s jersey currently worn by England international Frazer Forster.

“There is no question I will miss all my friends and family when I go away, but I intend carrying on with my academic studies and as I will also be involved in full time training every day, I certainly won’t have much time to be lonely.”
