Concern over state of estate

MARIAN Park residents say dangerous moss needs to be removed from their estate, which is long overdue a cleanup.

Chairman of the local residents group, James Malone, said Roads Service needed to get a grip on the moss on their roads, which was making it dangerous for drivers and pedestrians.

“We are worried people are going to slide on the moss,” he said, adding that grass and mud were also blocking drains in the area.

He said he had recently been in contact with Roads Service but the issue was yet to be dealt with.

Mr. Malone said he also hadn’t seen the council’s mechanical sweeper, due every six weeks on the estate, for around seven months.

“The last three or four interagency meetings, which Roads Service and the council are at, it was raised about the mechanical road sweeper,” he said.

“People in the estate are lifting litter themselves but it would help with glass and stones etc.,” he said.

A Down Council spokeswoman said: “Down District Council is looking into this matter”.

A Roads Service spokeswoman said: “”Roads Service’s local Section Office has no record of the issue of moss on the main road into Marian Park having been raised in the past.

“However, now that the issue has been raised the road will be inspected and the situation assessed and cleansing action will be taken if deemed necessary for road safety reasons.”
