A COFFEE morning held at Murphy’s Bar in Downpatrick has raised £1,065 for the Alzheimer’s Society.

The event was organised by Elizabeth Smyth who suffers from the condition and uses a number of services the charity provides to help her remain an active member of the community.

Elizabeth said she is indebted to many local businesses who donated prizes for a raffle during the coffee morning and to Murphy’s owner, Mark Murphy, for donating the venue and providing the tea and coffee on the morning of the event.

The Downpatrick woman is also grateful to Murphy’s restaurant manager Michelle O’Prey for her help in organising the coffee morning and the help and support she received from her family, especially her granddaughter Laura Healy.

“I organised the coffee morning to help people who suffer from Alzheimer’s and to aid research into the condition in the hope that a cure can be found,” explained Elizabeth.

“I want others to know that help is out there in all local towns. Support groups, befriending groups and one-to-one services are available and if anyone needs help or information they can contact Martin Towers at the Market House in Ballynahinch, telephone (028) 9756 4681.”
