Centre is valuable resource

SIR, — I would imagine, and hope, that you are receiving many emails and letters very similar to this one regarding the need for the Saint Patrick’s Centre to continue its existence in Downpatrick.

I am hoping that the power of large numbers of supporters will have a positive influence on the outcome of the recent financial crisis facing the Centre.

In 2010, I was extremely blessed to be among a group of young people chosen to participate in the Centre’s annual Young Ambassador Programme which provided me the opportunity to travel to Northern Ireland, participate in an internship in my career field, learn about the shared cultural heritage of Northern Ireland and North America, and promote a greater understanding of the history and importance of Saint Patrick in Northern Ireland and around the world.

I could easily write a 10 page paper on the tremendous impact that the Young Ambassador Programme and Saint Patrick’s Centre had on me, but in the interest of brevity, I would just like to emphasise how essential it is to have a centre in Northern Ireland that is as knowledgeable, educational, fun, and active in the community as the Saint Patrick’s Centre.

I’ve been fortunate enough to visit many places in the world, but in no place have I ever experienced as much pride and hospitality as I did in Northern Ireland — all thanks to the Saint Patrick’s Centre.

The Centre’s programs and activities create a ripple effect that greatly contribute to the health of Northern Ireland’s economy and tourism industry.

I truly hope that it can continue to do so for future generations.

Yours etc.,
