Centre brings in welcome visitors

SIR, — Having listened to the news recently I’m somewhat dismayed to learn that the Saint Patrick’s Centre is under threat due to under-funding of £20,000.

I read recently in the Down Recorder that Down Council is to spend £350,000 on furniture for the new council officials at the Downshire site. But it is plain to see by all concerned that once the council is amalgamated with Newry this building will become a white elephant. Newry will be the new headquarters and all they will need in Downpatrick will be a yard to store vehicles.

At a time when visitor numbers are up due to the Titanic attraction, the Saint Patrick Centre will surely benefit from a knock on effect.

I hope that the powers that be will have the foresight to see this and will immediately release more funding for this vital local centre.

Yours etc.,

RATEPAYER,

Strangford.
