Castlewellan celebrations

8 March 2017

CASTLEWELLAN hosted their annual awards dinner on Saturday night.

It was an evening that celebrated the achievements both on and off the field of play.

Guest speakers were Jack Devaney, from the County Board, and Armagh and Crossmaglen legend Oisin McConville. Both men spoke highly of the club and how the community is the backbone of a wonderful club.

Oisin also spoke about how as individuals we can achieve the targets we set. He touched on his own club and how their success for years at club level is and will always be of the hard work put in by the members, and how every member within the club is held with the highest of esteem no matter their role.

Two players picked up double awards across both codes as dual players, this highlighting how their talents are not going unmissed, Sean Hardy picked up the Senior Hurler of the Year and U-21 Footballer of the Year accolades, while Aoife Keown was named Camogie Player of the Year and Ladies Football Managers’ Player of the Year.

Elsewhere, the Senior Footbaler of the Year was Donal McKibben, Seconds Player of the Year was Finbar Toner and the Minor Footballer of the year was Gareth McKibben.

Ruairi Toner received an award for his contribution to minor football and Ladies Footballer of the Year was the reliable Kathleen McCartan.

A special award was made to Sorcha McCartan for her achievments this year. Another dual player, Sorcha picked up a double college All Star with her school, St Louis’ Grammar School, Kilkeel. She went on to represent Ulster and was a part of the successful interprovincial team.

Off the field of play Donal Ward was named Clubman of the Year. This is an award that Donal deserved. His dedication and consistent application and support to the club throughout the year never went unnoticed.

Elsewhere a special presentation was made to Gerry Dougherty for 50 years’ service to the committee. This is an amazing achievement, and even after 50 years Gerry continues to bring the club forward in the best way possible.

Congratulations to all recipients. We hope for the same success in the year to come. On behalf of the committee we would like to wish all teams the very best for the season ahead.
