Cancer groups show their worth with massive donations

13 January 2016

TWO of Action Cancer’s local fundraising groups have presented the charity with donations totalling over £16,000.

The Portaferry Action Cancer group donated £15,000 raised over the past year through sales from their Bric-a-Brac shop.

The Comber and Newtownards Action Cancer group, one of the charity’s longest running charity Groups, also donated £1,500 from fundraising within their local area, including a quiz within Supervalu.

For the Portaferry group, this brought their total donation since opening in 2010 to an outstanding £90,215.03.

The group’s chair, Ellen Allen, said: “We simply couldn’t do it without all the help we get from the community. All the people that help us with volunteering, delivering and ping in items, telling people about the shop — and especially everyone that comes in to support us.”

The Comber group’s chairman, Nick Hanna, said: “I’d just like to thank all the members of the group for their help, which continues to allow us to raise vital money for life saving services, as well as everybody in Comber and Newtownards that is so supportive.”

Both groups are made up entirely of volunteers who dedicate their free time to raise funds for the only charity in Northern Ireland to provide free breast screening for women outside the NHS age range.

Action Cancer’s Leigh Chamberlain thanked everyone involved in fundraising with the local groups.

“We’re proud to say we have some of the best volunteers in the country, and you can see that from these brilliant totals,” she said.

“It takes a lot of hard work to reach these large targets, and everyone at Action Cancer is so grateful for all the time and effort our volunteers put in. Thank you also to everyone in the greater Newtownards area who continue to make it possible with your generosity.”
