Brothers ‘Relish’ movies

WHEN Downpatrick brothers Ken and Carl Papenfus, of Relish, were asked to co-write a musical film with Hollywood director John Carney, they could not have imagined the response.

Set in 1980s Dublin to an original soundtrack (co-written by Oscar winner Carney, the Papenfus brothers, Gary Clarke and Graham Henderson) that also features Duran Duran, The Cure, Hall & Oates and Spandau Ballet among others, this John Carney semi-autobiographical movie has been nominated for a Golden Globe.

The film has been shortlisted for the category of Best Motion Picture in the Musicals/Comedy genre, with the results from Beverly Hills to be announced on Sunday.

Sing Street is about a boy growing up in Dublin during, who escapes his strained family life by starting a band to impress the mysterious girl he likes.

A spokeswoman for Relish said: “Naturally Ken and Carl are thrilled with the news and are hopeful of a win in the category, also citing their musical performance in the soundtrack among their best.”

Relish are perhaps best known for the songs ‘Rainbow Zephyr’ and ‘You I’m Thinking Of’, from their debut album, ‘Wildflowers’. They have released three albums and have another on the way this year.

The band also recently collaborated with Sinead O’Connor on recording Blind Willie Johnson’s ‘Trouble Will Soon Be Over’.
