Brent geese set for lough

17 September 2014

ONE of the most spectacular local wildlife events is about to occur.

Tens of thousands of Brent geese will be arriving in great clouds over Strangford Lough later this month having flown from their breeding grounds in Arctic Canada.

The first flocks have already appeared and the National Trust is anticipating the huge onslaught will be in full swing by the end of the month.

A special Brent Bonanza well be held by the Trust at the lookout post at Mount Stewart on Saturday, September 27, as the geese flock in to their winter feeding grounds.

Seamus Magouran, National Trust Ranger on Strangford Lough said visitors will be able to view the birds close up through telescopes and chat to staff about the fascinating lives of these long distance migrants.

In addition to the Brent geese, there will be thousands of other waterfowl and waders of many species, all of which arrive from their breeding grounds in the Arctic to spend the winter on Strangford Lough.

The free event runs from 1-4pm and for more details, contact Mount Stewart reception on (028) 4278 8387.
