24 May 2017

THREE local beaches feature prominently in this year’s Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful awards.

Murlough and Tyrella have retained their international Blue Flag status, while Minerstown beach has secured a Green Coast Award.

The stunning beaches at Murlough and Tyrella are among a list of eight across the Province to secure the prestigious international status which recognises excellence in facilities, environmental management, education and water quality.

Blue Fag designation is an award programme certified by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE).

Worldwide, 47 countries participate in awarding Blue Flags to more than 4,000 beaches and marinas.

The Green Coast accolade which Minerstown has secured recognises agreement between the operator and the local community to protect and promote a natural beach environment rather than developing visitor infrastructure.

Northern Ireland’s coastline has some iconic sights with many of the beaches that have secured awards part of or close to Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty with specially protected habitats and species forming a large part of the experience visitors enjoy.
