Blackwater head is doing her best for the students

SIR, — I am writing with regards to your printing details of the ETI (Education and Training Inspectorate) inspection report on Blackwater Integrated College.

As the parent of a child attending this school, and of other children who attended the formally named Down Academy, I have to say on a personal basis that I have nothing but praise and admiration for Dr. Olwen Griffith and her dedication to the children attending the college.

I found the published report contradictory in certain areas and as a parent feel that the importance of an integrated school in our community has been brushed aside.

My child attends the learning support unit for literacy and numeracy classes. Not only have they greatly improved in both areas of learning, but through the support and knowledge of the teacher and assistants they have also gained confidence and self-esteem, both of which are essential in developing as a mature independent adult.

I would ask parents to look at their individual experience of the school, their child’s learning outcomes and the quality of provision they have experienced. I am sure that most have been very positive and reassuring.

All areas of education need constant reviewing, updating and planning for progression. I have no doubt that any areas which require improvement will be addressed by the principal and staff of Blackwater.

I only hope that they get the financial and professional support from the Education Board to do so.

Yours etc.,

A SUPPORTIVE PARENT.
