Beware of latest trick used by car jackers

SIR, — I want to make people aware of a method being used by car jackers to steal cars from unsuspecting motorists. Just last weekend on Friday night we parked in a public car park in Belfast. As we drove away I noticed a sticker on the rear window of the car. When I took it off after I got home, it was just a receipt for petrol.

However, I have recently heard of a warning from the police that the note on the rear window could have had a more sinister outcome.

The police warning said this method is being used to get people to stop unwittingly before their cars are stolen.

The method used is when people start the engine and begin to reverse they look into their rear view mirror and see the paper stuck in the middle of the rear window. Drivers then jump out of the car to remove that paper that is obstructing their view. When they reach the back of their car, that is when the carjackers appear out of nowhere, jump into your car and take off.

And guess what, ladies? I bet your purse is still in the car. So now the carjacker has your car, your home address, your money, and your keys. Your home and your whole identity are now compromised!

If you see a piece of paper stuck to your back window, lock your doors and just drive away. Remove the paper later.

Yours etc.,

CLOSE SHAVE,

Downpatrick.
