ST Malachy’s High School in Castlewellan celebrated its best ever set of exam results at its Senior Prize Giving on Thursday.

Principal, Mrs Orla O’Neill, reinforced the vision of St Malachy’s as ‘Aspire, Inspire, Achieve’ as she spoke of her pride in each of the students’ present.

“I am very privileged and honoured as principal to be a part of this wonderful school that has produced such high calibre students, who have all moved on from success to success and who represent all that is great about inclusive Catholic education,” she said.

Sharing the recent exam result success of the students, Mrs O’Neill said: “It’s great to be able to say they are the best ever again with 75 per cent of students achieving A* to C grades in five or more subjects and an amazing 64 students achieving seven or more A* to C grades and many achieving eight, nine and 10 GCSEs.

“Once again, the quality of results has increased with many students securing several A* and A grades across the board in a wide range of subjects. One hundred per cent of the A2 students left us with two or more A levels to follow courses at many of the top universities.”

In her address, Mrs O’Neill thanked all of the parents and caregivers for their support of the school as well as the staff of St Malachy’s for their hard work on behalf of the students.

The guest speaker for the evening was entrepreneur Mr Ben Best, who started the ‘Tree of Knowledge’ eight years ago, providing cutting-edge courses and resources for schools and businesses. Ben helps inspire young people and adults to reach their potential and in 2010 was voted Young Entrepreneur of the Year.

The prize-giving also featured musical performances from the school choir and musicians, concluding with refreshments in the school canteen.
