Ballynagross pitch boost

Ballynagross pitch boost

5 March 2014

A LOCAL soccer club is celebrating a cash windfall from Down Council.

Ballynagross FC has been given the green light for a new pitch development thanks to a £33,500 grant from the council.

The Newcastle League outfit can now forge ahead with their plans to develop a new pitch at Saul, near Downpatrick.

Ballynagross is one eight sports clubs across the district to be awarded a sports development grant from the council.

As well as a new pitch, the club plans to build changing rooms in order to meet Newcastle League specifications. The club currently plays all its home games at Killyleagh.

Club chairman Alan Craig last night said he was delighted with the financial support and that the club’s dreams of having their own ground can be realised.

“The club recognised that the commute to Killyleagh for home games was not sustainable for the club’s future,” he said.

“The club committee had the vision to see the potential in moving back closer to Ballynagross and the security this would provide to the long term future of our club.

“The announcement from Down Council week supports our club’s vision and plans. We want to develop and build a local sand-based pitch which will provide an area for our teams and also a facility for local teams to use.

“Ballynagross FC provide teams in the Newcastle League and Downpatrick Youth League. We want to grow in size and development.”

Mr. Craig paid tribute to the support the club received from local councillor Gareth Sharvin. He also thanked two former players, brothers Joe and Brian Ritchie, for their assistance.

“I would like to thank Councillor Sharvin for his help and the many hours he has given to Ballynagross Football Club in helping to secure the necessary requirements involved.

Councillor Sharvin said: “The confirmation from council in this funding for Ballynagross Football Club’s project is warmly welcomed.

“This facility will provide a home to Ballynagross FC, but it also provides an area for senior and youth teams to use.”
