Ballyhornan goes online after action

20 April 2016

TWO days after community officials in Ballyhornan went public with concerns about problems connecting to the internet via a new fibre optic box provided by British Telecom, the issue has been addressed.

Residents in Ballyhornan and Bishopscourt have been campaigning for improved broadband connectivity in the area for a number of years and were delighted a new fibre optic connection was made available.

But there was confusion that some homes and buildings including the Tiny Toons pre-school playgroup — which are very close to the connection box — were having problems connecting to the world wide web.

Mrs Patricia Curran, chairwoman of the Ballyhornan and District Community Association, said after going public with the concerns of residents last week, she was contacted by BT and the issue has been resolved. She said the playgroup will soon be online and everyone associated with the group is delighted.

“There was a long campaign to improve broadband connection in the Bishopscourt and Ballyhornan areas and we were delighted BT installed this new box. Some people were having no issues connecting to it but others were, including the playgroup,” she continued.

Mrs Curran added: “We are very grateful to BT for responding to our concerns and hope residents will soon be able to enjoy full internet access which is so important in today’s world. Connecting to the internet was a major issue for people in Ballyhornan and Bishopscourt, but the provision of the new fibre optic box has made this considerably easier.

“We expect that it will be two more weeks before the playgroup is connected and it is is hoped other people who have had problems getting connected will soon be on line.”
